日本ジョンソン協会は、イギリス王政復古期からウィリアム・ブレイク没年時に至るおよそ150年の期間のイギリス文学の多元的研究を行う学会です。イギリス１８世紀を代表する文人であるサミュエル・ジョンソン博士の名前を冠していますが、個人学会ではなく、「長い１８世紀」のイギリス文学・文化全般を射程に収めています。創設はジェイムズ・クリフォード教授が来日された 1964年の翌年の1965年であり、４０年以上の歴史を誇ります。
現在の会員数は１５０名強です。
The Johnson Society of Japan prides itself on having a history of more than
four decades. It dates back to 1964, when Dr.James Clifford, the renowned
scholar of Dr. Samuel Johnson, came to Japan. This incited some Japanese
scholars to establish a society specializing in 18th-century English
literature. In the following year, they founded The Johnson Society of
Japan.
